URL Shorteners

The Jakarta Globe today this week introduced its own shortened URL to help identify and track links that goes to its stories from Twitter.

I’m a huge fan of custom URLs because it tells you where your link goes. While shorteners like goo.gl, bit.ly and tinyurl are fine for the general public, these private, branded ones like aol.it, tcrn.ch, engt.co, on.mash.to and jglo.be are much better for content publishers as well as everyone else.

While publishers will be able to track the links, readers will be assured that they won’t be duped into going to another site.

Of course, then we come across Twitter for Mac that automatically shortens any URL that gets manually entered into it to t.co. Whoever thought this would be a great idea needs to be put into a blender. By the way, this URL issue with the app deserves a post on its own.

[update] Turns out the link on each of @thejakartaglobe’s tweet leads not to individual articles but to the category page the article belongs to. This puts a major dampener on the excitement front and pulls out the, “what the fuck were you thinking?” banner.

Jakarta Globe takes a look at sponsored blogging ahead of Pesta Blogger 2010

Whenever someone talks about bloggers, the topic of paid or sponsored posts always comes up. Ahead of Pesta Blogger 2010 in Jakarta this Saturday, The Jakarta Globe brings up the issue with Enda Nasution, a prominent Indonesian blogger, as well as Ong Hock Chuan whose company, Maverick, is the organizer of the event.

In terms of paid blogging, Enda he [said] that it shouldn’t be a problem as long as the writer is honest. A disclaimer is needed whenever an author writes about a client or a product. “

If readers think the blogger puts up too much sponsored content, people will eventually feel it. If they don’t like it, they will leave the blog,” he said.

In essence, paid blogging is seen as an acceptable practice as long as the author discloses the fact or makes it obvious in some other way. Excessive sponsored posts also tend to deter readers which means while it’s not a regulated practice, there’s an ethical aspect that bloggers need to acknowledge and at the end of the day it’s up to them what kind of readers they want for their blogs and the perception people that might have.

Top 10 Annoying Office Buzzwords

Grumpy colleagues, slow computers and office jargon are the things that annoy workers most, according to a survey released on Wednesday.”- The Jakarta Globe
Yeah, touch base. I hate that term. You wanna touch base? Are you trying to hit on me? What’s next, first base, second base, third base, home run? So ambiguous.

Push the envelope. What does that even mean? Trying to bribe?
Blamestorming… I actually like this one. Witty.

Thinking outside the box. Yeah, ugly phrase but people work in cubicles. Practically in boxes. Can’t blame them.
Blue sky thinking. WHAT THE HELLL???

What you don’t wanna hear while taking off on a plane

“Passengers on a Batavia Air plane scheduled to fly from Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport to Surabaya were sent into panic when they saw smoke coming out of the back of their plane before their scheduled takeoff on Thursday morning.

Batavia Air Corporate Secretary, Edi Haryanto told the Jakarta Globe that the passengers were panic stricken and forcefully opened the emergency door.
“They opened the emergency exit and came out of the plane using the slide,” Edi said.

Edi said that the smoke coming out of the engine was an ordinary occurance during the process to prepare for take-off. “It’s just an ordinary thing,” he said.”
