Learning a new language

Learning a new language has always been something that’s like a hobby to me. Unfortunately, due to lack of practice as well as usage, I’ve pretty much shed most of the languages I’ve learned over the years.
As a child I was apparently fluent in Chinese, or so my mom said as we were living in Singapore at that time. Don’t ask me which dialect it was, I wouldn’t have a clue. Throughout high school I picked up French up until college. At college I also took up Japanese although I had some Japanese lessons during junior high for a limited time.
The problem with those languages was that I was never in a situation that required me to really use them. The best way to learn a language is to be immersed in it. My life is surrounded by English and Indonesian with a smattering of Javanese and as a result my fluency in languages is in that order.
Just recently I signed up to learn yet another language but I’m determined to make this one work especially because it can help me understand the stuff that I work with much better. Who knows his could be something seriously worth my while.
This is not any ordinary language. In fact it looks bloody complicated so I’m going to need a lot of time and effort learning it. So what the hell is it? Well, it’s Cocoa. What the hell is Cocoa? It’s the stuff that chocolate is made of. And also, OS X applications.
So hey, this writer is going to learn programming. It’s probably going to take ages. Anyone wanna lend me a hand, I’m open to suggestions. And by suggestions I don’t mean telling me to learn Visual Basic or its siblings.

Props to @anima for the heads up on cocoadevcentral.

Detik, you’ve done it again

I’m now questioning the wisdom of Yahoo! for cutting a deal with Detik to provide them with news feed for the Indonesian market after Detik fed them this crap.

The title is: Tengkorak Vampir Wanita Ditemukan di Italia
or in English: Female Vampire Skull Found in Italy
Detik never bothered to mention that the whole vampire thing was a misunderstanding by the people of that time due to lack of knowledge. Not a single line mentioned this fact.
That is a skull of a woman who was thought to have been a vampire because when they dug her grave to make way for more victims of the plague, her body had not fully decomposed yet and it looked like she ate through her shroud. The miseducated masses thought she was a vampire feeding on the corpses around her.
Sensationalist journalism can kiss my ass.
Here’s a proper article on that subject from Livescience

Yet Another Thunderstorm in Jakarta

Taken just outside PIM 2 entrance. Quite a thunderstorm this afternoon.

Went to PIM for a swim this morning but there was no sign of rain even as we left the pool at midday. Who knew it would pour like crazy less than 2 hours later?

We had lunch at Red Tomato at PIM 2, I got a chance to upload an overview of the joint to buuuk from the iPhone, submited a couple of bug reports for both buuuk and the recently released Transjakarta app. Both are being prepped for Telkomsel’s iPhone launch next Friday at Pacific Place.

Oh yeah, Transjakarta app is free for a limited time.

Tumblr, Twitter, and Email

In Tumblr we have reblog and like
In Twitter we have retweet and fave

They’re really just evolution of forward and flag with emails.

Am I right?
