The rebellion starfighters in Star Wars are called X-Wing, Y-Wing, B-Wing, and A-Wing. These people at Lucasfilm must have the incredible foresight of the Super Nintendo/Nintendo 64 controller.

On the other hand, how the hell would the people in the Star Wars universe know what those letters mean? They don’t read Earth alphabets, they use their own, called Aurebesh. Their equivalents for those letters look nothing like ours. So in the stories, who came up with the names of those starfighters and why?
