Most used apps

Here’s something light for a change. What are your most used apps on your computer?

Mine would be as follows:

Twitter App (Tweetie or DestroyTwitter)
Twitter is my main window to the world. Most of the things I read I get from my Twitter feed whether it’s a simple conversation, discussion, news items, or any tidbit of information. It’s my “coffee shop”. Currently there are none more well made Twitter app than these two.

Browser (Safari)
Pretty obvious. The browser has in many respects become the secondary operating system. I check email on my browser, I open work files there too via GoogleDocs sometimes, I read my news there, do my research, and I manage several blogs right in the browser. Safari because Firefox sucks balls and nothing you say would change my position.

Text Editor (Bean, Pages)
Only natural that this would be on my top three, given what I do. After all the researching on the browser, this is what it boils down to. I lined out the reasoning behind these apps a short while ago.

Imaging (Skitch, Preview, iPhoto)
What’s text without some image to accompany it eh? I don’t have a real need for something as powerful as Photoshop (SHOCK! HORROR!), a combination of these three great apps give me what I need most of the time.

Aside from those, I always run Activity Monitor to keep my finger on the pulse. Having your CPU load history on your dock is a good way to keep tabs on how much pressure you’re putting on your system.

Music comes courtesy of my iPhone which means iTunes is not opened most of the time, only when I need to sync it with my Mac. My entire music library is at home in a separate drive so when I’m at the office it makes little sense to have iTunes opened.

Guess what? Pages and iPhoto are the only paid apps as part of iWork ‘09 and iLife ’09. I didn’t need to buy expensive apps, at least not in my line of work. It may be a different story if you were a graphics artist or musician, or if you really need to run Office and the alternatives just don’t cut it.

So what’s yours?
